Texas Sen. Cornyn leads bipartisan support for 16th Air Force HQ pitch

A bipartisan group of Texas politicians led by Sen. John Cornyn is backing Port San Antonio ’s $1 billion proposal to move the Air Force ’s main cyber headquarters to the growing tech hub. In a letter to Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall , Cornyn, fellow Republican U.S. Rep. Pat Fallon and Democratic Reps.

Port San Antonio wants to build $1 billion-plus campus to house Air Forces Cyber The letter echoes many of Port San Antonio President and CEO Jim Perschbach’s talking points about the effort, which calls for using intergovernmental support agreements to pay for pre-development and construction of a new campus for the Air Force unit that oversees a vast enterprise of cybersecurity, information, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities around the world.

Air Force is considering Port San Antonio’s unique proposal to build new cyber headquarters “I am very, very thrilled to see the support of Senator Cornyn and Representatives Castro, Fallon and Cuellar,” Perschbach said Monday. “They really came through.” He said his own conversations with the Air Force and Defense Department are continuing and he’s heading to Washington, D.C., this month to discuss the matter.

Port San Antonio jockeying to be ‘flying car’ hub As such, most of its work is classified and high-tech, requiring secure facilities and solid infrastructure. The 16th is currently operating in JBSA’s Building 2000, a 71-year-old structure with a hobbled HVAC system and foundation problems that have caused shifting floors and cracked walls, Casarez said.
