And as the legal battle plays out there are big questions about how SB4 could affect people in our community. Many are fearful that they could be targeted unfairly. The latest chapter came late last night when a federal appeals court put the law on hold once again.
"It’s not to fight immigration, it’s to fight illegal immigration and what’s happening at our border," says Representative David Spiller."This idea that people are now in fear that they’re going to be deported to Mexico is completely unfounded," says Rep. Spiller. He defends the bill he authored saying it’s necessary to secure our border.
This afternoon, Governor Greg Abbott tweeted on SB4 saying in part: "While the fight continues in court to uphold SB4, Texas continues to arrest illegal immigrants for criminal trespass. More than 41,000 criminal arrests have been made."
