Mural of Spurs greats Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker by Albert Gonzales on a building at South St. Mary's and Pereida streets. With the team playing two games in Austin this season and Austin billionaire Michael Dell buying a 10 percent share of the team last year, U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales worries it might, even as the“Where there’s smoke, there’s fire — and there’s absolutely smoke,” the San Antonio Republican said.
The legislation would require teams to give a year’s notice if they want to relocate, and it would allow local governments to veto the move. It would also force teams that do move to reimburse whatever financial assistance or incentives were provided to them, such as special tax incentives or arena financing. Local governments could sue teams for damages, as well.
But he argued that cities make serious commitments to teams to keep them, offering generous tax breaks and other incentives. And the teams become important to local economies. Each year, the Spurs generate an estimated $696 million for San Antonio, supporting close to 2,000 jobs.
Let the market dictate it. The government ruling where teams play is just another step in the wrong direction.
TonyGonzales4TX We are witnessing the last gasps of a failed Congressman. He wasted his term chasing conspiracies about the spurs moving to Austin while TX23 families suffer from gun violence, lack of healthcare, & an asylum crisis. I will enjoy beating this 🤡 in 44 days!
They wouldn't be the same without (San Antonio) in front of that name! They'd have to change the team name too anyway, something Austin is known for and full of. Like the 'Austin Californians' for instance.
