Texas State lawmakers are considering making changes to state policies and laws to crack down on squatting. It’s an issue happening statewide.

A squatter is someone who occupies a property without legally owning it or having permission from the property owner. They often move into vacant, abandoned, or neglected properties.

“Now that this happened, I hope that this brings an emergency for all the homeowners and all the councilmen to do their job and to do something about the squatters,” said Arturo Campos, who lives next to a house he said is empty and under foreclosure. “There’s already policies and procedures in place to handle that, but if we don’t know that it’s happening at a specific site, then we can’t do anything,” said McKee-Rodriguez.During Wednesday’s hearing, experts said law enforcement is limited on what they can do when the property owners are not the ones reporting the issue.
