Representative Shawn Thierry, D-Houston, calls for Texas to do more study of maternal mortality data during a special legislative session in July 2017. Representative Helen Giddings , D-DeSoto, and Marsha Jones, Executive Director of The Afiya Center, look on.Texas health officials intend to release maternal health data and recommendations for the upcoming legislative session, according to a letter sent to State Rep. Shawn Thierry.

The state so far has identified 149 potential pregnancy-related deaths in 2019. DSHS has released incomplete reports in the past, and the decision to delay publication was criticized by maternal health advocates and legislators, some of whom have suggested the delay could be politically motivated, given the looming midterm elections.

"I respect your need for updated data and recommendations given the upcoming legislative session," Shuford wrote."The committee meets again on Dec. 8, 2022, and I will discuss these matters with them. My intent is to provide data and recommendations timely to help inform efforts during the 88th Legislative Session.
