Abbott has lost the support of many fellow Republicans.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was hit with a lawsuit Wednesday filed by the Republican Party of Texas and top members of his own party over his decision to expand early voting for the upcoming presidential election, in the latest and most significant break between the once-popular Republican governor and his own party over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.... [+]Abbott had expanded early voting in Texas by moving up the start date from Oct. 19 to Oct.

But that move has been criticized by other Republicans in the state, some of whom said that Abbott was acting as a “lawsuit are the Republican Party of Texas, party chairman Allen West, seven state legislators, the Texas agriculture commissioner and many other prominent Republicans in the state. In addition to a six-day expansion of early voting, the lawsuit also challenges Abbott’s move to allow mail ballots to be delivered to an election clerk’s office other than on Election Day itself.

The timeframe allowed for early voting and delivery of ballots is enshrined in the state’s election code, the GOP argues.“Given the extraordinary circumstances Texans have faced over the past seven months, it is shocking that Governor Abbott has continued to unilaterally suspend laws while refusing to convene the Texas Legislature,” the lawsuit said.
