Delegates boo U.S. Sen. John Cornyn after he speaks during the second day of the Republican Party of Texas Convention at George R. Brown Convention Center on Friday, June 17, 2022.Not satisfied with the new voting restrictions put in place less than a year ago, the Texas Republican Party is plowing ahead with yet new measures that would reduce the number of early voting days and end the practice of allowing any senior to vote by mail without an excuse.

“Texas Republicans rightly have no faith in the 2020 election results and we don’t care how many times the elites tell us we have to,” said Republican Party of Texas Chairman Matt Rinaldi, who was elected the leader of the party with no opposition. What’s more, the Republican Party of Texas membership voted overwhelmingly at its statewide convention in June to make more election reforms its No. 1 priority for the next legislative session that begins in January.

Democrats decried the last round of Republican-led restrictions as voting suppression calculated to discriminate against Black and Latino voters, going so far as to flee Austin mid-session and stay away for weeks to block the legislation and slow its passage. The legislation put new restrictions on vote-by-mail and reduced early voting hours in places like Harris County that ran late night and 24-hour voting centers.

Voting rights groups and Democrats are concerned that lawmakers are cutting voting options at a time Texas“They’re clearly doing it to hold onto power,” Texas Democratic Party chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said of Republican tactics on elections. “The whole electorate has shifted on them.” State Sen. Bryan Hughes, the lead Republican author of the election reforms enacted in 2021, said he’s not committed yet to any additional reforms, but stressed that he’s pushed to improve election security for years.

The censure rule was a major point of debate during the GOP convention as grassroots volunteers complained about legislators and members of Congress not paying enough attention to their legislative priorities.
