WASHINGTON — Houston-area Republican Rep. Troy Nehls, a former sheriff, said Tuesday he was the subject of a U.S. Capitol Police investigation that...

that what the officer improperly photographed was material that “detailed the introduction of a pro-law enforcement bill that would have ensured body armor quality for law enforcement officers.”

None had vests or hard hats on, and the agents were following up to make sure everything was OK, not for an interrogation, a department spokesperson toldthat according to their staffer’s account, three men dressed in workman-type attire — Carhartt-like hoodies and jackets — knocked at the door. They identified themselves as Capitol Police special agents and showed the staffer their credentials. The agents were identified as such in reports following the incident, the spokesman said.

The Capitol Police incident report, a copy of which Nehls provided to Fox News, says the officer found the office door open and investigated. The officer noticed “suspicious writings mentioning body armor” on the white board and the marked map, and filed a report.Nehls’ spokesman said if the officer found the door open, he was within his prerogative to enter the office and clear it, but the officer took a picture of private congressional work protected under the Constitution.
