Dr. Duren Michael Ready introduced two resolutions to the Texas Medical Association, calling for more diversity of thought in the debate about gender medicine. The Texas Medical Association, which Texans look to for medical guidance, has allowed activists to weaken its commitment to the best possible health care. I witnessed this capitulation firsthand at the TMA’s annual meeting on May 3 and 4.

As a longtime member, I know the association is supposed to unite all medical specialties around the common goal of improving Texans’ health. I wanted to ensure the association continues to do that, respecting evidence-based medicine and encouraging physicians to speak freely about the best way to help patients. So I introduced two resolutions for my fellow delegates’ consideration.. I asked the TMA to update its guidelines on transgender medicine.

My second resolution befell the same fate. I asked the association to adopt a formal “open discourse policy,” guaranteeing members’ ability to “speak, write, listen, challenge, and learn.” While I noted in the resolution that some members may find diverse ideas “unwelcome, disagreeable, or even potentially offensive,” the TMA should still “maintain a climate of mutual respect,” while never unduly stifling opposing viewpoints.

Policymakers and the broader public look to the TMA for guidance; physicians look to follow its guidelines. They think they’re getting medicine, but they’re increasingly getting activism. And it’s essential to realize that only a small number of activist physicians are calling the shots, since the vast majority of physicians don’t participate in TMA meetings. A minuscule group has made it seem like there’s no debate on transgender treatments.
