Other North Texas awards included $2 million to Southern Methodist University to recruit its first CPRIT Scholar, Annika Wylie, whose research focuses on a gene mutation found in at least half of all human cancers. She isUT Southwestern Medical Center also received $2 million to recruit researcher Xiaofeng Qi and the University of Texas at Dallas was awarded $1.8 million to recruit Chen Cao.
CPRIT was created by the Texas Legislature and $3 billion in funding was approved by a statewide vote in 2007. In 2019, Texas voters supported an additional $3 billion for research and prevention.
