In this Friday, March 22, 2019 photo, Allan Votaw, 66, pauses as he recalls and describes the years of abuse he suffered at the Cal Farley's Boys Ranch during an interview at this home in Kingston, Okla. Votow says his childhood years of 1957-1967 at the famed ranch near Amarillo, Texas were marked with horrible abuses against himself, his two brothers and numerous other boys placed under care of the rural institution.
that featured a handful of men — including childhood friends — describing abuse they suffered there as children. Adams also said he hadn’t considered using an outside party to investigate the allegations and produce a public report, something legal experts say can give validation to those speaking out.
“They didn’t care about us then and they don’t care about us now,” said 69-year-old Steve Smith, who was 8 when he and his 5-year-old brother arrived at the ranch in 1957.The Child-Friendly Faith Project Mental health experts say the abuse described by the men can have lifelong effects, not only by causing conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety but also increasing the risk of suicide, health problems including diabetes and cancer, and risky behaviors including alcohol and drug abuse.
Votaw’s brothers have both died — the younger one, Gregg, from a heroin overdose in 2009 at age 55. The older one, Rusty, died by suicide in 2014 at age 63; Votaw says his older brother had pancreatic cancer at the time.
God bless Texas, they need it.
We need to take claims of abuse seriously, men and women. These men are not being heard; that needs to change.
These victims deserve restitution and apologies.
Typical. Government efforts no matter how noble, always seem to concentrate evil. Yet, socialists like the Dems keep telling us more government will make society better.
Why is the molestation of young boys SO prevalent in Christian society? Boy Scouts - molestation Priests - molestation Church Retreats - molestation Youth Homes - molestation Ranches? - molestation
Christofacists are evil
I’d check into Dan Adams past. What a stupid comment. Amazing that this idiot is running the ranch now.
joshtpm Christian faith was abundant on this horrifying boys' ranch but respect for the boys' rights was completely absent. How interesting. Can we learn from this?
What an awful story. I hope these men find some peace.
Anything that’s called a boys ranch is a no ...
CHRISTIANITY AT ITS FINEST, FOLKS! RIGHT HERE. what an abomination this place and its supporters are.
Completely unacceptable.
‘Cause the past is in the past? F that. Focus on healing what happened to those who came before while creating a safer space today.
