Texas has awarded $307 million in contracts for 14 miles of new border wall near Del Rio and in the Rio Grande Valley.

Border wall construction resumes near the Eli Jackson Cemetery in Pharr on March 21. Texas has continued border wall construction with state money after President Joe Biden halted federal construction last year., our daily newsletter that keeps readers up to speed on the most essential Texas news.

The Texas Facilities Commission voted to approve a $167 million contract for New Mexico-based Southwest Valley Constructors Co. to build nearly 6.7 miles of border wall near Del Rio and a second contract worth $140 million to Montana-based BFBC of Texas, which plans to build 6.95 miles of wall in the Rio Grande Valley.

Francoise Luca, a spokesperson for the Facilities Commission, said in an email that the new sections of wall will be built on private land once the agency secures land-use agreements with the property owners.Former President Donald Trump made building a wall his signature issue, and the federal government constructed 80 miles of new barrier during his four years in office, including 21 miles along the Texas-Mexico border.

That segment was erected by New York-based Posillico Civil, Inc., which won a $162 million state contract in November to build a total of 8 miles of wall — a cost of just over $20 million a mile. By comparison, border wall construction under the Trump administration ranged from $6 million to $34 million per mile, according to a Texas Tribune analysis. Luca said the Facilities Commission"is still finalizing land-use agreements for this contract segment.

This will be an expensive photo op for Abbott Just in time for campaign season too What a coincidence

Meanwhile people in TX freeze to death because of the grid

Payola from the governor to a crony donor, no doubt.

It’s Abbott’s money laundering scheme. He inherited it from TFG. Before TFG was the nominee, Texas monied GOP were told about the wall and they were having donor mtgs in support of TFG. They would leave those mtgs talking about fence building contracts in lots of 18-20 million.

$22 million per mile ? WTF?

The first mile cost $900 million. I dont see how they'll pull this off.

$307M for 14 miles?!!

Abbott has something going on in the Rio Grande Valley. All his endorsements are there, the only border crisis in TX is there, he only visits there. Couldn’t be that his wife’s family is from nearby Monterey Nuevo León Mexico…

14 miles?

Why can't we gave nice things 👆

No to bobby o=Biden 2.0

Well I guess GregAbbott_TX lied about helping Texans. That money would be used to help us with our electric/gas bills.

I'll do 15 miles for $100 million.

Is this the same wall that the wind blew over?

Too bad fentanyl is coming through on the Canadian border 🙄

So, how’s that power grid? 🤔

Please enquire about how big were the donations the contractors made to Greg Abbott.

Yay! More taxpayer dollars for an useless wall.

txchristabelle Wouldn't that money be better spent on the power grid?

How much of that money goes in Abbotts pocket!!

How tall is the wall? (Asking for the Home Depot ladder department in Ciudad Acuña)

GOPChairwoman Abbott's trying. He's only had since 2015 to get it done.

A total waste of $, except for the bit funneled to Republicans!! GregAbbott_TX

14 miles? I walk more than that on a slow day at work. Your $307 million dollar block is worthless

Ridiculous waste of money.

Island_Huuker 1000 miles short but good for them !

14 miles down, 1.240 miles to go. Looks like a good use of money 😑

Wait a gosh darn minuto, I was told this wall had already been built. Someone is lying to me. 😂

Mexico is paying though right?

I can feel the electrical grid and the foster care system and the number of uninsured Texans getting better already

I'm sure that the fact that one of the winning companies mostly only donates to Republicans is entirely coincidental'

About time! Texas

Abbott wants to make Texas ugly.

Only $22 million per mile...what a bargain...and 1,243 more miles to go. Forget the electric grid, taking care of the needy, taking care of the immigrants, we need sensation! GregAbbott_TX is a complete loser wasting your tax dollars on this BS Vote for BetoORourke

Will there be gun towers every 100 feet als

And yet they refuse to pay teachers or fund our public schools. When you wonder where all this money Texas is supposed to have disappear you know exactly where to look. The corrupt GovAbbott and the Trump loving TexasGOP.

$300 million to build a few miles of a wall that will have an inconsequential effect on immigration. We as Texas taxpayers continue to pay for Abbott’s props and gimmickry GregAbbott_TX

Waste

Has he fixed the grid? What actually has he done for the betterment of the state over the last 8 years?

Which would be much better invested in improving the security of ports of entry.

AbbottFailsTexasEveryday

Wait.. wasn’t Mexico going to pay for this?

That's a hefty price, $21 mill a mile. Taxpayers money to burn. We elected the politicians responsible for this.

Another FAIL for the fascist Abbott and his fellow thugs.

Are those contracts legal? Back door deals? Good ol’ boys? That’s GovAbbott doing business in Texas.

7 years too late!!

Useless waste of taxpayers funds in pursuit of a monstrosity that will hurt both people and the environment of the borderlands. ChingaTuMuro

🤦🏽‍♂️ not even to Texas companies, New Mexico and Montana

So much for so little, all entirely unnecessary and useless

What a waste.

Finally, we can keep all those deplorable TEXANS out of Mexico. FuckTexas

All of 14 miles.

Just think of how much that could help our failing grid.

$307 million that could go to schools, law enforcement or just lower taxes. Because the need for a wall is a LIE. The majority of migrants that GovAbbott screams about are surrendering at the border and requesting asylum. Problem? Yes! But a wall won’t fix it.

Over 20 million dollars per mile of fence sounds like a poor use of tax dollars.

bckSpokane The Texas border is only 14 miles?

Thats $4153 per foot. Someone is stealing taxpayer money.

Good
