Texas,Attorney General,Guaranteed Income Program

The office of Texas Attorney General is challenging the county's guaranteed income program, 'Uplift Harris,' which provides $500 monthly for 18 months to nearly 2,000 eligible households. The program is funded by the Federal American Rescue Plan Act, but the Attorney General argues that it violates the Texas Constitution. The program lacks rules on how the money should be spent. A study by The Urban Institute found that recipients used the funds for rent, child care, and groceries. Austin had previously announced the continuation of the program, but there is no information about a potential lawsuit targeting the city.
