Texas lifted its statewide mask mandate and any capacity restrictions on businesses across the state Wednesday. Now the state's attorney general is threatening to sue Austin and Travis County leaders who continue to require masks in public.

Texas' top law enforcement officer has threatened to sue leaders in the state's capital over their coronavirus mask requirements.

Attorney General Ken Paxton in a letter to Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Andy Brown said he would sue unless local mask mandates were rescinded by Wednesday at 6 p.m. local time. But both local leaders say they won't back down, setting the stage for the latest showdown in a long-running, nationwide clash over public health rules that often breaks along political lines. Sixteen states have no statewide mask rule.
