— Jonathan M. AlexanderThe Texans’ offense has not yet improved with the team's switch to backup quarterback Kyle Allen. The offense has gained 16 yards on three drives.
The Texans average 65.7 yards on their cumulative first three drives this season, although the position switch followed a dismal first-half performance last week when a Davis Mills-led offense gained just 5 first-half yards against the Commanders. Allen is 4-of-8 passing for 24 yards. The Dolphins’ defense has consistently pressured him and logged a third-down sack on the second drive that forced a punt. Dameon Pierce has also been limited to 4 yards on two carries. This has become a recent trend. The fourth-round rookie from Florida has struggled at the start of recent games. The Commanders limited Pierce to 8 yards on 10 carries last week.
Meanwhile the Texans’ defense is struggling to stop a potent Dolphins passing attack. Miami's offense stalled on their opening drive due to a holding penalty and a critical drop by Jaylen Waddle, which yielded a 45-yard field goal. But Tua Tagovailoa was 5-for-5 passing for 63 yards and a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Durham Smythe on Miami's second drive.
How the Texans field their tight ends in the remaining six games will be notable. Akins and O.J. Howard are playing on one-year deals, and Jordan is under contract through 2024. —
