What snags has the U.S. hit in expanding testing for the new coronavirus? What treatments are in the works? Here's what we know about the state of testing and treatment

By Thomas M. Burton and WSJ Staff Updated April 9, 2020 9:32 am ET The U.S. was slow to test for the new coronavirus, and the nation now grapples with major outbreaks in states like New York, Louisiana and Michigan. In the race to catch up, dozens of testing options are becoming available. At the same time, a range of companies and hospitals are researching potential treatments.

• Whether diagnostic tests are available depends on factors including where you live and the policies of local governments and your health-care provider. There still appears to be a mismatch between the number of people who need tests based on symptoms, and those who actually get them.Where in the country are tests being done? • The CDC maintains a count of public health labs using Covid-19 diagnostic tests. As of April 7, there were 95 labs around the country doing such testing.

• The number of confirmed cases is substantially lower than the number of infections, public-health officials say. Along with a shortage of tests, many people who get infected might not be sick enough to realize it or can’t get a test. • LabCorp said it now can run about 40,000 tests for Covid-19 daily and that based on current volume levels, it can provide results within two to four days to the health-care provider from the date of the specimen pickup. Abbott Laboratories has a test that can give results within minutes, but these generally are at hospitals that use Abbott analysis machines.

• Medical professionals have limited supplies of the swabs and chemicals known as reagents needed to conduct the tests and personal protective equipment needed for those who treat patients. This still is a factor limiting numbers of tests. What treatments are in the works? Possible treatments for Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, are all experimental or have only emergency-use approval, as opposed to full approval from the FDA.

One snag Trump's 're election . The mass testing would expose the enormity of the infection across America . If we had a President that listened to his intelligence community an earlier shutdown would have saved so many lives . Would have given us more time to aquire PPE . 1 TERM

we know the Feds are pulling funding and that will needlessly kill more people

不检测都是流感,一检测都是新冠!
