The billionaire Republican donor said he usually tries to stay 'behind the scenes' and 'keep it quiet' when donating to political figures.

A billionaire Republican donor who lives in Tennessee donated $1 million to South Dakota to help defray the costs of sending National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas, a donation accepted by Gov. Kristi Noem.

His donation has drawn intense scrutiny as Johnson does not live in either South Dakota or Texas. The donation came from Johnson's private foundation and appears to be legal, but experts have voiced concern over a possible precedent being set where wealthy donors are essentially given command of theA member of the National Guard shines a flashlight on immigrants crossing the Rio Grande into the U.S. on June 19, 2021 in Roma, Texas.
