Ted Sarandos, the one-time video store clerk who led Netflix's content strategy, has been named the streaming giant’s co-CEO

Sarandos said he was skeptical of Hastings’ vision when the two met more than 20 years ago, wondering how the Internet upstart could ever compete with a home video giant like Blockbuster. The one-time Texas video store dynamo went bust in 2010 and Netflix pivoted from a DVDs-by-mail business to internet streaming service, reaching 193 million subscribers in 190 countries.

The executive is an unabashed film nerd, having grown up in a poor neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona, where the flickering TV in the living room was his main form of entertainment. He brought his passion to the local video store, where he reportedly plowed through its entire library of hundreds of films — a prodigious knowledge he ultimately brought to Netflix.

As Covid-19 has paralyzed Hollywood production, Netflix continues to churn out original content — including recent summer film fare like“We’ve reinvented ourselves again and again to meet our members’ needs: from DVD to streaming, from licensing to originals, from series to film and from U.S. to local language stories told by creators all around the world,” Sarandos said. “My journey to co-CEO of Netflix has been as a fan of great entertainment.
