This week on ‘Ted Lasso,’ a spotlight episode on Coach Beard finds him tumbling through London’s after-hours scene and spiraling in his own mind. Alan Sepinwall’s recap.

If your expectations for the episode are based on the last five or so years of increasingly serialized television, you may view it as pointless filler that adds nothing to the plot. If you’re someone who feels like time spent with interesting characters only enhances the larger experience, you likely delighted in this extended spotlight on the most mysterious member of the core ensemble., I had mixed feelings about “Beard After Dark.” Yes, it offers some insight into its title character.

So after nearly two seasons of lurking at the edge of the frame and offering pithy wisdom about other characters’ stories, Hunt finally moves front and center for “Beard After Dark.” We open with a replay of Beard and Ted’s talk from the end of “Man City,” then follow our temporary title character for a weird odyssey through the highs and lows of London nightlife. He rides home on a train packed with giddy Man City fans .

After an interlude where Beard rewards the fanboys with a chance to run around on Richmond’s home field at Nelson Road, he finally takes everyone’s advice to pick up his keys and go home, only to break the key off in the lock right as a downpour begins.

Was this episode a dream or did it really happen to Beard?

Almost unwatchable.

Blue Moon imagery (you saw me standing alone 🎶 ) Queen’s We Are the Champions homage to Rocky Horror Martin Scorsese’s After Hours parallels Deep religious metaphors “Without a dream in my heart. Without a love of my own 🎶”

“Hopefully in the future Apple gives the creative team lots of advance warning about how many episodes they’ll be making in a given season, so they can plan accordingly.” sepinwall Agree 💯. I was just saying the episode seemed like a waste of resources.

it’s the new After Hours

Worst episode yet. I feel like he only got his own episode because he created the show and produces it.

This episode needs to be watched at 10x speed with a Benny Hill soundtrack running over it.

I loved this episode. People keep using the word “mesmerizing” to describe it and that’s how I felt about it. Two thumbs up from me.

Episode was pretty much exactly what you’d expect if the writers of Ted lasso tried to pay homage to eyes wide shut. Aka it sucked

He's been talking about him hes added to the criminal list... anyone who mentions etx is a xrim

I always knew he took how I walk he isn't a man. ... lol

This would be the best episode of almost any other series. But they just keep delivering great ones so it just ranks very high.

Yes, most of the critics were mesmerized by this episode. For me, it was the most boring, “blah”, 43 minutes of television that I can ever remember watching. And, this coming off of last week’s spectacular, incredibly compelling, episode.

This episode is the worst

Is everyone missing the connection? This is a Ted remake of the movie After Hours!

Just watched it. It was mesmerizing.

Is this the Ted Lasso “International Assassin” episode?

Absolutely loved tonight’s episode.

Much as I dig all things Brendan Hunt, this episode felt like that Lost episode about Jack’s vacation to Thailand.

This is one episode I will never watch again. Ugh.

Every time I tried to like this episode, it let me down. Watching it was like the reverse Ted Lao experience: where normally with this show every time I wanted to call it corny it surprised me by transcending its genre, this episode disappointed me every time I tried to like it.

Meh.

When's the book coming out? Geez!

Tumbling? He f&cking NAILED that landing!!

sepinwall nice write up on this episode. It’s trippy for sure. Good to see a cameo by ThierryHenry TedLasso
