OLYMPIC CHAMPION: 22-year-old Nathan Chen became an instant icon on Thursday when he skated his way to a gold medal to the tune of Elton John's 'Rocket Man,' making him the first American figure skating champion in more than a decade.

"I mean, I don't really feel like I'm the most qualified person to talk about it," Chen said."Whatever ends up being the case will be the case, but I'm still wrapped up in what I was able to do today."With a socially distanced crowd watching Thursday afternoon in Beijing and millions back home on late-night TV, Chen soared through his opening quad salchow.

While the spotlight shined bright as ever on Chen, it seemed to fade away for his longtime hero and Japanese rival.
