I am a writer, journalist, professor, systems modeler, computational and digital health expert, avocado-eater, and entrepreneur, not always in that order.Singer Taylor Swift recently appeared in a video, but not the kind that might win an MTV Video Music Award. After you get laser eye surgery, you can’t just “Shake It Off,” as the Taylor Swift song goes.
If you want to try LASIK, it’s important to go into the surgery with, to use the title of another Swift song, “Eyes Open.” Not just literally, so that the ophthalmologist can reach your corneas but figuratively too. Make sure that you know the risks involved. Realize that while over 80% of those who've undergone LASIK no longer need corrective lenses,, things don’t work out for everyone.
Furthermore, be aware of the recovery that’s involved. As the saying goes, surgery is only minor when it is on someone else. Even though the procedure is fairly quick and can be done rather “swiftly” within 30 minutes, recovery takes some time. Swift mentioned that she had taken some painkillers because after the procedure it’s common to experience pain, discomfort, sensitivity to light, burning, itching, dryness, or the feeling that something is in your eye, besides, of course, your eyeball.
Then there are those goggles that Swift wore in the video. No, she wasn’t to trying to be Falcon, the Marvel superhero who’s a member of the Avengers. Rather, these were eye shields to keep her from accidentally rubbing or putting pressure on her eyes until the cornea flaps had the chance to heal. The FDA timeline also recommends waiting:Up to two weeks before using lotions, creams, or make-up around your eyes.
