Donald Hazard, 44, of Hurst was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty in February to a charge of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers.

That afternoon, Hazard encountered police officers as he was climbing the steps of the Capitol building. An officer “engaged” with Hazard in an attempt to force him back when Hazard grabbed him, the men fell and continued to fight as they fell down the stairs, prosecutors said.

The officer was knocked unconscious and sustained injuries to his head, foot and arm, with some requiring surgery. About an hour later, Hazard entered the building and was inside for roughly five minutes, officials said.During the riot, Hazard also advanced toward a line of officers with a canister of pepper spray in hand, according to prosecutors, and took videos where he made statements such as “We’re here at the nation’s Capitol and we’re storming it. We’re taking the Capitol.

Hazard was arrested in December 2021 after being identified in photos shared by the FBI. Since the insurrection, more 1,000 people have been arrested across the country in connection with the Capitol breach, and
