Earlier this year, Lakewood opened its new $6.5 million recycling and refuse center building.

While residents are able to drop off materials for free, the city recently increased fees.“The current rules and fees we have in place in certain areas are 30-plus years old and they just need to be updated,” he said.

The Lakewood Refuse and Recycling Center fees are increasing to $50 per car, $75 per van or SUV and $100 per truck.“What I iterated to City Council and I want to reiterate to the public is, these fees are not in place as residents come up there to drop off things at the facility,” he said. Hypothetical patterns of abuse could be a hired landscaper paid by residents to haul away material ends up regularly dropping it off for free at the recycling and refuse center building.

“We want these fees in place to target frequent flyers and not residents following the necessary rules and regulations,” he said. “We went through many different scenarios and we’re just trying to filter out the potential for abuse.
