A Target store is shown in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021. Target says having its stores closed on Thanksgiving will be the new normal, permanently ending a tradition that it embraced for years. The move, announced Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, comes as the Minneapolis-based discounter and other retailers including Walmart and Macy's will be closed for the second Thanksgiving in a row.
To limit crowds in stores, retailers last year were forced to turn what had become a weekend shopping blitz into an extended event, with holiday sales beginning as early as October.U.S. holiday sales last November and December rose 8.2% in 2020 from the previous year, according to The National Retail Federation, the nation’s largest retail trade group. The trade group predicts 2021 could shatter that record, growing between 8.5% and 10.5%.
Distribution and call centers will have some staff on Thanksgiving, Target said Monday, but stores will remain closed.
may you meet with joy
Don’t let this fool anyone. It’s no favor to the workers as they are still required to work until midnight on Wednesday and then turn around and come in Friday at midnight. Leaves zero time to be spent with family
because they realized they make more money by closing the stores, staff are still working
Honestly, target probably realized they don’t have the staffing before they thought about giving their employees the holiday off.
Literally NO Target employee was forced to work on Thanksgiving. None. Same with Walmart. The signups to VOLUNTARILY work would fill up within hours of going up because so many people REALLY wanted to work for the bonus, to get away from family, or because they HAVE no family.
Good
Does anyone really care? I don't
I give it 5 years.
Good job target others need to do the same. Also close early afternoon Xmas eve and stay closed Xmas day. Used to be stores closed at 6pm Saturday and didn’t open till Monday morning. People were home with family and behave like human
Now do Walmart
Why doesn’t anyone cry about retail working on New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, or Labor Day? Why are Thanksgiving and Christmas the only holidays that matter?
Kudos to Target!
That's a start. But now, let's end Black Friday sales that start so early the next Friday that people still lose their Thanksgiving because they have to stock shelves overnight or open the store before the sun rises. BoycottBlackFriday
Target gets a heart and will be closed on Thanksgiving. BRAVO!
Good
Good! People should get time with their families.
I'm glad the pendulum has finally swung in the other direction. For years stores were opening earlier and earlier on Thanksgiving day. It was awful when I worked retail.
Good
I will now shop at Target as much as possible as a show of support for this.
Ughhhhlll munkh
One less looting day opportunity.
I hope they still get paid for the day.
'Tradition'
Thank you Target
