Disappointment over a lack of major Chinese investments has left some EU capitals feeling they have little to lose by deepening ties with Taipei

BERLIN—Nations across Central and Eastern Europe are deepening ties with Taiwan as relations with China cool, leading to confrontation with Beijing.

“We know very well from our own history what it’s like to live with a big brother behind your back,” said Milos Vystrcil, the speaker of the Czech Senate. “And this is why we support Taiwan, because they live with a big brother behind their back, the People’s Republic of China.”How will improved ties with Taiwan change Europe’s relationship with China? Join the conversation below.

When a delegation of Czech officials led by Mr. Vystrcil visited Taiwan in 2020, China’s foreign ministry said that “they shall pay a heavy price for their shortsighted behaviors and political opportunism.” China released footage of soldiers throwing smoke grenades and storming a beach in a province directly across the strait from Taiwan. “There is definitely China fatigue in the region,” said Ivana Karaskova, a China research fellow at the Prague-based think tank the Association for International Affairs. “The expected influx of Chinese investment has not materialized…and the countries are now more interested in exploring ways of cooperating with Taiwan.”

President of the Czech Senate Milos Vystrcil angered China when he led a Czech delegation to Taiwan last year.In Lithuania, a former Soviet republic that now borders an increasingly assertive Russia, some see a reflection of themselves in Taiwan.

wise choice 👍 It's very hateful for China to use force to send fighter jets to harass my country's airspace in Taiwan frequently. i ❤ my country🇹🇼 deeply No one wants their country to be harassed and bullied by force all day long🤬

China's solution is to donate 3 million sets of reinforcement pliers and ladders to Belarusian immigrants free of charge.🤣

'Disappointment over a lack of major Chinese investments', so it comes down to money, poke the Chinese dragon to get a few coins. It's not like Taiwan will be able to invest much considering it's smaller population wise than Shanghai.

They need to get used to it, and remember that two Germanies and two Koreas were or still are recognized by international community. It does not block their effort to unify such as for Germany.

Those countries have a total population smaller than Guandong.

ratio

Hope they have hearts not only considering financial aspects
