The governor said he selected Way, a former Passaic County freeholder and administrative law judge whom he called a “proven public servant,” to join him “in finishing the job that Sheila and I started.”
Way stood beside her husband, former New York Giants fullback Charles Way, as state Supreme Chief Justice Stuart Rabner administered the oath of office. She will now serve as second-in-command to Murphy. The governor’s office said Way is scheduled to serve in the role for the remainder of Murphy’s second and final term, which runs through January 2026.
“What Tahesha has demonstrated, time and again, is that she can handle the single most important responsibility of any lieutenant governor — and that is being ready to step in, and serve as governor, if needed,” Murpy said. “She is brilliant. She is battle-tested. And she represents the best of New Jersey.”
“I will do everything in my power to bring the down the cost of living, so no parent will have to suffer the indignity of choosing between putting food on the table or keeping a roof over their child’s head,” she added. The New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus said in a statement that Oliver was “an institution” in the state’s government, and it’s “only fitting to her legacy that her replacement be a Black woman who is committed to public service.”
