Coates, whose June 2014 Atlantic cover story"The Case for Reparations" had helped kickstart the current discussion about reparations, argued that"it is impossible to imagine America without the inheritance of slavery." "We grant that Mr. McConnell was not alive for Appomattox...He was alive to witness kleptocracy in his native Alabama, in a regime premised by electoral theft. Majority Leader McConnell cited the passage of civil rights legislation yesterday, as well he should, because he was alive to witness the harassment, jailing, and betrayal of those responsible for those legislation, our government sworn to protect them.
6/19/19 9:00:47 AM -- Washington, DC, U.S.A -- Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., greets writer Ta-Nehisi Coates before testifying in front of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties during a hearing on reparations for slavery on June 19, 2019 in Washington. The hearing coincides with Juneteenth, a holiday that marks the date that Texas abolished slavery in 1865.
"My wife Kelly and I actually have a much older son, who happens to be African American...I mention that today for one reason. I personally know the challenges he has faced early in his life. I have walked with him through discrimination he's had to endure over the years and the hurdles he's sometimes faced. I know all of this because I was with it."
For all their talk that realDonaldTrump has divided the country I can't think of anything much better than benefits by law reserved for one specific demographic to get everybody at each other. Vote buying and greed, plain and simple
They can't solve today's problems so they throw money at yesterday's
All this does is support the victim mentality. The Democrats want to keep black Americans on the plantation. Anyone related to slaves of the past has had unlimited opportunities their relatives never had and I for one know hundreds who are wonderful thriving hard working people.
I truly feel for the slaves from the past. However, my ancestors were very poor and couldn’t afford slaves even if they would have wanted them. So why should my tax dollars now pay for something that my ancestors never contributed to?
There is always someone coming up with some crap!🙄
Oh FFS, how about the Irish?
Shouldn’t happen and won’t under Trump
This is a racist pipe dream being irresponsibly dangled at our most poor residents. No. It will never happen.
This is the craziest crap I have ever heard!! Blacks were not the first slaves. They need to go back and study the history of slavery.
How about the ancestors that fought for slaves freedom and died for it. Don't forget about them.
You already have it. You’re Americans.
Will they be paid in the amount the currency was valued 150+ years go? Who will set the monetary amount? Are people going to have to proof they are descendants of slaves, and how? Like, seriously!?🤔
So slavery has a price tag that will fix it once and for all? Interesting
Literally they are trying to buy votes
Another handout? How long will that go on, another generation? Don’t you see that is the problem, not the solution?!
🤔...that’s a new idea from 150 years ago ?
Reparations may be needed for anyone who was a slave but, I don’t think that applies to many people nowadays. Hmm?
What a joke! Democrats way of buying black votes 🙄
Only 1.4% of whites in the south had slaves and less than 10% of today’s black are descended from slaves. Friendly reminder 😉
How about you try to take the shit i earned for my family and ill pay you in lead? Seems fare to me.
Slavery reparations is a step backwards for every black American, just like Black graduations being seperate from all, make up your minds, do you want equal rights or extra rights, Irish were slaves in this country at the same time and before, where is theirs
He never plucked cotton and I never had a slave. All about free money, no more no less.
Is Leave My Family Alone and Let Us Live In Peace on the table? Reparations ReparationsHearing
It is sheer madness for Democrats to muck with this albatross in an election year. It won't happen, it probably isn't even legal, it's terribly devisive, and it is guaranteed to alienate the largest voting block, whites.
