ZURICH - Switzerland will sign an accord backing China’s Belt and Road Initiative when President Ueli Maurer visits China this month, cementing ties with a major trading partner as other Western countries view the gargantuan project with scepticism.
President Xi Jinping’s new Silk Road initiative has been controversial particularly in Washington, which views it as a way to spread Chinese influence abroad and saddle countries with unsustainable debt, a charge Beijing rejects. Neutral Switzerland sees the BRI accord to be signed during Maurer’s trip as a way to support economic development, especially in central Asia.
Maurer, who is also finance minister, will attend the second Belt and Road summit next week which is expected to draw around 40 foreign leaders.

HSBC-sponsored British Cycling puts the malaise down to a lack of cycling infrastructure. I used to ride 25 miles to work, but after dozens of close calls due to angry or distracted drivers, objects thrown at me, and crumbling roads, I ride indoors. This is horrible to read, I love to ride and though I am fortunate to have bike trails nearby, the overall distractions of drivers at crossings and walkers with cell phones on the trails is a constant hazard. It’s a never ending obstacle course full of situational awareness. It would help if cyclists actually used tracks where available and stayed in single file.
