The speed with which five Memphis police officers were fired following the traffic stop of a man who later died in a hospital is unusual but could become more common, according to those studying police and criminal justice issues.

“In the old days, you’d have the officer’s word. If the victim was still alive, you’d have their testimony, If someone had died, you’d have the medical examiner’s report. All of that would play a role,” he said. “With body cameras, the evidence is right there.”

Body cameras can only tell a full story if they are on and working throughout an entire incident, Thomas said. Some officers may forget to turn them on. Others may deliberately turn them off.“Law enforcement can no longer act with impunity,” he said. “Absolutely, officers will be let go more quickly.”

Firing an officer is the most severe job action, Oliver said, suggesting that department officials feel confident they can support the decision.“There is far more scrutiny of police today,” he said. “When I was in policing there was less of a likelihood that something a police officer was doing would be caught on video.”

I think you answered your question..the officers were black..that's why they were fired so quickly

Are you living up to your own guidelines AP?

Yeah but we also need to normalize NOT re-hiring them as cops in a different city afterwards

Well the officers involved were black, so the union definitely want going to protect them with any vigor, so the dept had no issue with throwing them under the bus to distance themselves from what happened.

Maybe. The officers fired in Memphis were Black. I’m just sayin

The time should be as quick as they charge any citizen with committing a similar crime.

I'm sure the decision was made easier because all five cops are black.

Well that speed was more probable related to every officer involved was non-white officers.

What was their race? any other time that is the 1st thing you yellow 💛 press state...

Charge them with murder! Their excessive force, tasing and beating caused his death!!

Let's see if there's the same swift action when the cops are white.

“fired”. Imagine working at a job where when you kill someone the worst thing that happens to you is getting fired.

rhonda_harbison Swiftness should be the norm!

This is rare in Memphis too , our cops really aren’t that bad so it’s weird to hear about this going down . But yeah cops do need to face harsher punishment for the Shit they do knowing damn well we would be jailed for doing the same thing .

Oh. Never mind. Another special interest move. Justice not involved. Cops never disappoint.

The speed may have been due to their skin color...

ap do better. You don't get to pick and choose when to be colorblind.

the cops were black. others were not so no it wont be more common.

'All five officers -- Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr. and Justin Smith – are Black, as was Nichols.' There's the reason, if they cops were white, they'd still have their jobs and be protected...

swift arrest would be good too.

Someone please tag me when they start firing white cops for killing folks.

Swift firing is avoiding justice! Also cops breaking their oath should be more severely punished than a regular citizen committing the same crime!

Doesn't do anyone any good if they don't lose their certification and if no national tracking warns the next department when they move

Because they were Black , if White there would be no action at all !!!

Well when you stomp a guy to death so savagely that your boss takes your boots away before somebody sees the chunks of face stuck in them yeah HR kinda has to step in

As long as they're Black, you can apply the speed.

Now do prosecutions
