David Oxley, senior Europe economist at Capital Economics, said that the sharp contraction of the Swedish economy during the second quarter", despite the government's well-documented light-touch lockdown." Swedish government officials have insisted that saving the economy was never the purpose of their controversial coronavirus strategy. Its aim was to save lives and reduce pressure on the country's health care system.

It is next to impossible to say what effect, if any, the country's response had on its economy, since there are so many factors at play. It is clear, however, that the Swedish economy has fared much better during the second quarter than many other European economies.during the second quarter, its GDP fell 18.5% compared to the previous quarter.

NPR convinces suburban, college educated NPRKarens to surrender their free will without the slightest amount of opposition. Sad. NPR Editor's note - 'Too many use Sweden as an example of good policy. So, we must convince them Sweden's efforts were futile.'

I guess letting people die doesn’t help an economy. Right realDonaldTrump TrumpVirusDeathToll160K TrumpEconomy

The actual take-away is that democracies don’t need draconian top-down controllers in a pandemic - a well-informed populace of free individuals will observe their own best interest.

We have them beat 32.6%. SMH

This is the weakness of economic globalization, and the Chinese virus has maximized this weakness.

terrible, only 22% better than the USA

cities are going to survive this pandemic and not die despite what the ' experts in healthcare and journalist ' are telling people ask any urban planner /city planner.

off topic but people should have asked/ googled industrial designer /engineer / aerospace engineer about air plane filtration system before freaking out about flying .

what is NPR is not mentioning is that way lower than the rest of euro zone if we going by GDP as measure . Also Covid cases decreasing in Sweden , increasing in Germany , France , Spain , England , Italy , norway ..........

GrogsGamut something else you might like to share with Adam_Creighton regarding successful outcomes & statistics? auspol COVID19 economics

Wasn't that part of their strategy? That people would police their behavior with little government intervention?

The death rate outperformed too.

Do you think perhaps some other countries and their hardships had something to do with this?

There's a lesson here that the US won't learn.

When this is is all over (after the election) we are going to hope for an 8% drop in GDP, some say it’s gonna be well into the double digits. Just the way China wanted it.

And that gives you the warm and fuzzies.

The Swedes blew it. Just ask their neighbors

Didn’t shutdown and still bad economics damn sucks

We all suffered losses. Sweden was not alone. But at least the Swedes have built up their immunity far better than most of us who have been scared and isolating in our homes.

Well - the pandemic didn't just go away. They are in an economy with everyone else. Turns out - they made the right call, and they were still hit less hard than everyone else.

Dear God, why didn't the free market save Sweden

Now THAT is interesting
