A former Washington state football coach who lost his job for praying on the field after games is making his case before the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. FOX13

Kennedy’s effort to get his job back helped earn him an appearance at aand quickly became a cultural touchstone, pitting public school employees’ religious liberties against what his critics describe as longstanding principles separating church and state and protecting students from religious coercion.

Photo credit: First Liberty InstituteWhile Kennedy insists he never cared whether students participated in the prayers and he never asked them to join him, at least one player reported participating contrary to his own beliefs, for fear of losing playing time.

For Kennedy’s supporters, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ holding in the case would force public school employees to drop their religious identities at the schoolhouse door — something they say the Constitution does not require. Kennedy, a former Marine whose day job was at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, began coaching football at Bremerton High in 2008. He was new to religion and coaching, and said he was inspired by the movie "Facing the Giants" — about a Christian high school football coach — to give thanks to God "on the battlefield" after each game.

We treat teachers as if they have no rights. School board members have absolutely zero clue about the law, yet they seemingly act as if they are above the law at every turn. Good for this guy taking a stand.

Hmmm I think he’s a Tim Tebow fan 🤔

Any person in the United States should be able to pray wherever the hell they want to. Or else we’re not a free country. And if the Democrats have their way we won’t be a free country soon

Prayers 🛐

This is such BS. The public school offered reasonable accommodations for his prayers. Coach Kennedy insisted on praying at the 50 yard line immediately following football games and students/players, by their own testimony, felt compelled to participate.

Raise your fist during the Anthem: allowed Take a knee during the Anthem: allowed Not be on the field during the Anthem: allowed Praying after a game on field: Not allowed Makes sense 🙄

More, less biased information “He said the same thing to me,” Mr. Peterson said. “I said it may not have been explicit coercion, but there was an implicit coercion. When the coach goes out to the 50-yard line, he has something to say.”

Separation of church and state.

Maybe God wants him elsewhere.

I hope he wins. Then we can lead a prayer to Satan before and after every practice and game. We'll know who our starting players are... The team prayers. I mean team players.

He shouldn’t have been allowed to be children for so long. It is long to go around constantly beating children. That is the core of Christianity. We all know how they be. Beating kids until they can’t stand is how xtians be.

Ridiculous. He broke the rules repeatedly. As a coach he should have realize actions have consequences. He set a terrible example for the kids he coached.

A fucking jerk

Foxnews Seattle appears to support state employees praying on state owned football fields. What's next religious cults taking over airplanes tand singing religious songs and praying (aka Highjacking). SCOTUS is corrupted, but democracy will survive these fools

I lived in Bremerton when this happened. The irony is thick as Bremerton City Council prays before their public meetings.
