The Supreme Court appears poised to allow abortions in medical emergencies in Idaho, according to a document that was erroneously posted on the court’s website briefly Wednesday according to Bloomberg News. Follow here for the latest live news updates.

in medical emergencies in Idaho, according to a document that was inadvertently posted on the court’s website briefly Wednesday, according to Bloomberg News. The document showed the justices voting 6-3 to allow the emergency abortions on a temporary basis while the case continues. This would let stand an opinion from the full 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals that sided with the Biden administration in the case.

About 10% to 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage and many don’t require medical intervention, but some may require treatment using the same procedure used in an abortion. Miscarriages can put someone’s life at risk because of serious blood loss or infection if the miscarriage is not complete.

“When the justices took this case, they leapfrogged over the federal court of appeals, and froze the district court injunction against Idaho’s near-total abortion ban. This reporting suggests that the Court is going to say that it shouldn’t have acted so rashly, and will let the litigation proceed in the normal course,” he added.

More than 171,000 people crossed state lines to get an abortion in 2023, according to Guttmacher. That’s more than twice the number of out-of-state patients recorded three years prior. South Carolina and New Mexico saw the biggest spikes in the share of out-of-state patients, with 37 and 33 percentage point jumps, respectively. The release of the opinion marks the second time in two years that a major decision dealing with an abortion case has been prematurely released by the court.

“If the reporting is accurate, this would be a significant but temporary victory for the Biden administration,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law.
