Portal Space Systems is working on the development of a Supernova satellite bus to solve orbital mobility issue.

A spaceflight start-up has emerged from stealth mode after securing more than $3 million in funding from the US Department of Defense.

“Our nation is developing 6th-generation fighter aircraft technology but still uses 1st-generation satellite buses. Portal’s Supernova is designed around the customer need for unparalleled mobility and extended mission life.”Once a satellite reaches its designated orbit around Earth, it normally stays there unless it undergoes a major change in velocity, known as delta-v. In the space industry, delta-v is the measure used to quantify a spacecraft’s capability to change velocity.

Reportedly, a large number of satellites are launched with 500 m/s or less of available delta-v. This allows the satellites to make only minor adjustments, such as fine-tuning their orbits and executing some basic maneuverability to avoid colliding with other spacecraft. However, this is insufficient to alter their orbits significantly.Low Earth orbit is around 1,200 miles from the Earth’s surface, whereas geostationary orbit is roughly 22,235 miles above the globe.
