Colorado firefighters on Sunday made progress on a pair of fires that sparked earlier in the week, but most of the Front Range was still under a red flag warning amid dry and windy conditions. by shellybradbury

Low humidity and winds with gusts of up to 35 mph were expected between noon and 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service at Boulder, which warned that any fires that start “will have the potential to spread rapidly.”

Outdoor burning and any activity that could produce a spark should be avoided Sunday, the weather service warned.The Duck Pond fire sparked Saturday afternoon in the Duck Pond Open space between Gypsum and Dotsero,Evacuations remained in place Sunday for locations south of Colorado 6 between mile marker 140 to Dosero, including the Riverdance RV park and Stoneyard Distillery. Those evacuations impacted about 350 people, Eagle County Sheriff’s office Sgt. Paul Peterson said Sunday morning.

Evacuations were lifted in western parts of Gypsum but the area remained on pre-evacuation status; those pre-evacuation orders covered about 1,800 people, Peterson said, asking residents to be ready to evacuate if the fire pushes toward town.. Sunday’s evacuation zones are not expected to be lifted until at least Sunday evening due to fire suppression activities and expected high wind, officials said.
