Sundance First Look: ‘All That Breathes’ Follows “Kite Brothers” Devoted To Delhi’s Birds Of Prey

, a documentary that moved audiences with its story of a humble Muslim woman in North Macedonia who tends to wild bees. The film went on two earn two Academy Award nominations., directed by Shaunak Sen. The film focuses on Mohammed Saud and Nadeem Shahzadas, brothers in Delhi, India who devote their full energies to caring for injured birds, especially the black kite.

The first glimpse of one of the avian creatures comes about three and a half minutes into the film, a kite that appears to float in the smoggy sky. The image and the voiceover establish the lyrical tone of: “When other birds fly, their effort shows,” the narration says. “But the kite swims.” The brothers have treated 20,000 birds over the years. Kites are victims of the city’s intense pollution and face other hazards trying to survive in the metropolis. As birds of prey, they are meat eaters, which can earn them contempt from India’s Hindus, most of whom are vegetarian. Saud and Shahzadas are Muslim and do not object to the birds’ diet; in fact, they spend a significant portion of their time grinding meat to nourish the birds.

In the exclusive clip above, the narration notes, “It’s said that feeding kites earns ‘sawab,’ . When they eat the meat, they eat away your difficulties.”reverberates with some pressing societal questions. “As environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate,” a summary of the film observes, “the relationship between this Muslim family and the neglected kite forms a poetic chronicle of the city’s collapsing ecology and rising social tensions.”is an acquisition title, with Submarine Entertainment handling sales. Shaunak Sen directs the documentary; the producers are Sen, Teddy Leifer, and Aman Mann.
