New research shows students have fallen behind in math since the pandemic disrupted school, while most are progressing at a normal pace in reading, findings by the not-for-profit NWEA show.

FILE - In this Nov. 14, 2020 file photo, students demonstrate during a rally to call on New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to keep schools open. Classroom doors will open for elementary school students next week, but middle school and high school students in New York City won't return to in-person learning until after the holiday break, De Blasio said Monday, Nov 30.

Overall, NWEA’s fall assessments showed elementary and middle school students have fallen measurably behind in math, while most appear to be progressing at a normal pace in reading since schools were forced to abruptly close in March and pickup online. “Given we’ve also seen school district reports of higher levels of absenteeism in many different school districts, this is something to really be concerned about,” researcher Megan Kuhfeld said on a call with reporters.

NWEA compared grade-level performance on the 2019 and 2020 tests. It also analyzed student growth over time, based on how individual students did on assessments given shortly before schools closed and those given this fall. Black, Hispanic, American Indian and students in schools serving largely low-income families fared worse but the pandemic so far hasn’t widened existing achievement gaps, the Renaissance report said.

Do we agree in-person teaching is worth the wages now?

My granddaughter is struggling because the online lessons do not provide adequate explanation or practice. It’s pretty much “take this short quiz and if you [happen to] make a high enough score, we’ll assume you understand the concept.”

Parents realize teachers should be paid like politicians

'Falling behind' what? Oh yeah. An arbitrarily determined line created by politicians, administrators, and textbook executives, drawn so that the testing profit machine has a benchmark.

In other news, the sky is blue

kylenabecker 'since the pandemic disrupted'? You guys MSM and Dems are accountable for that. You should be arrested for child abuse.

Not just in math. We are 36th in the world in education, not something to be proud of.

Jesus Christ, the entire globe has been impacted since the pandemic. I'm sorry the children are getting a little behind. They will catch up. Suck it up for crying out loud.

Maybe prioritizing bars, restaurants, salons, and gyms at the cost of schools wasn’t a good idea? Huh. Who would have thought?

Being bad at math is seen by some as a presidential trait.

Zoom-based or traditional remote lessons are impaired by distractions and screen-fatigue. MindZu MegaMaths is designed for teenage attention spans. It reinvents the entire curriculum as a quest in which the learner makes maths their superpower to progress.

This means two things that teachers are effective and should be paid as such, and two myriads of parents don’t have the skills, savvy, or attitude to educate their own prodigy. getupdc gooddaydc workingforyou

They need to figure this out. Especially for the Teachers sake. Teachers are constantly thought of last.

Why not just have all kids repeat the class they are currently in next fall? PROBLEM SOLVED! YOU’WELCOME!

Truth

Why is the UN so silent when a small tribe is wiped out from earth by Ethiopia +eritrea+UAE jets helicopters drones. This war is worse than ww2. Tigray-tribe are extincting like dinosaurs. Ethiopia-80+Eritrea-24 divisions. Total above 1 million troops against Tigray-tribe. Unfair

As important as math is, and believe me I know it is, in this day and age the way kids live on their phones and on computers and on laptops, how many of them really add and subtract, multiply and divide anymore? Any math they need done they just do it with their technology.

Did you think that it was going to improve?

But why? 🧐

Math is a four letter word.

That explains why some people don't know that 80 million is more that 74 million...

Cost of pandemic. Now ask the question how do we need to change our curriculums to recover? This is going to take some out of the box thinking. Change the approaches. educationmatters EducationCannotWait

Ok... so they’re falling behind in math... big deal. Maybe we should stop focusing on test scores for a while.

No sh*t. You don't get wonderful bedtime math calculations.

I’m sure “new math” that was introduced a few years ago is partly a culprit. My friends find it extremely difficult to help their kids with math because it didn’t exist when they went to school.

There is something wrong if bars are open and schools are closed. Granted, in the beginning we didn’t know anything. But now evidence shows bars spread the disease many times more than schools

Well what do you expect when dumb Trumpers try to reach their kids? Of course they're failing. Alternatively, maybe they could stop holding superspreader rallies and put masks on so we don't need to shut the schools.

They're not 'falling behind,' they're surviving a global catastrophe.

$1500 dollars is not enough to convince me to take a vaccine 💉 that is of ? safety. I am MORE convinced if some (a few) head vaccine researchers , COVID task force members, vaccine developers , top government officials etc take the vaccine first on social media for us to SEE!.

Have to control the production (spread) of Covid19 first. There are tons of online books and programs families can use. Also, day to things can help like cooking, cleaning, board games, etc. Health has to be priority.

kylenabecker Not to worry. Their future is secure under bidenharis2020 TheGreatReset ☝️😐☝️ ☝️😐☝️

I'm not a fan of traditional schools. You're always stuck with 1-2 good teachers, the rest just a waste of time. These people are exaggerating, IMO. On-line education should be the standard.

kylenabecker Take it from me. We’re falling behind in everything. Please send us back to school

Yes, I can attest to that.

A very basic outline of a plan: COVID relief bill includes funds to retrofit classrooms and update HVAC systems, hire unemployed contractors/plumbers/electricians, etc. to do the work. Kids can't return to unsafe schools.

Remote doesn't work when you want someone else to BABYSIT your children for 7-8 hours.

kylenabecker FauciFraud

Well those kids should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps and deal with the reality of things. Or you know, blame the people making this harder for us. This shouldn't be this difficult.

They should cancel the year instead of pushing kids through school with a lousy education.

The last thing I want to hear about is the kids not knowing how to count. Send them back to school *now*, who gives a damn if they spread covid around to their families, right? 🙄

kylenabecker It’s those in final year who will struggle too. There’ll be a loss of that final year of bonding before they hit the world..

Where are the parents or guardians helping them stay on top? Damned if I let my son fall behind remotely.

No shit. Anyone with a kid knows this and anyone that can afford it has either switched to private or started home schooling.

Maybe people will start respecting teachers more

Makes sense. Math is a very hands-on subject. Remote learning involves a lot of self teaching for students and it is just simply too difficult for students to be facilitated.

What doesn’t kill you makes you weaker and dumber... 2020

Don’t blame the schools. It’s the parents’ responsibility to get their kids up to speed. You’ll always have 1/3 failing or are at risk.
