FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Air quality isn’t always topic ripe for optimism in the Fairbanks North Star Borough , but a recent study gives reason to think things are looking up.
Secondary sulfate, on the other hand, forms when a burnt fuel releases sulfur gas into the atmosphere, and then that gas oxidizes further once out in the open air. When PM2.5 goes up for discussion, woodsmoke is the common refrain among public officials. Woodsmoke contributes more than half of PM2.5 in the borough’s federal nonattainment area, and the study doesn’t negate that reality.“About 20% of the mass of the particles here in Fairbanks is sulfate,” Simpson said.
That switch has had noticeable effects. According to the environmental chemist, number two heating oil contains roughly 2,500 ppm of sulfur, with number one heating oil coming in at about 1,000 ppm.
