An estimated 900 Harris County residents a year would have avoided eviction rulings if it had been easier for them to get to court, according to an analysis of eviction data from 2000 to 2018.

The closer you live to your nearest justice of the peace in Harris County, the likelier you are to avoid being evicted if your landlord sues, according to a recent study.

“It turns out to really matter how hard it is to get to court,” Hoffman said. “And if we make people show up in court by a particular time in order to get to assert their rights, we are going to disadvantage people who don’t have money.” When they submitted the paper for publication, a journal asked if the study could be replicated in other cities. Princeton University’s Eviction Lab pointed Hoffman and Strezhnev to a dataset on Harris County evictions compiled by the Houston-based data company January Advisors.Houston woman’s startling eviction suggests how vulnerable tenants are. Experts say it was illegal.

If everyone facing eviction in Harris County lived a 10-minute drive from their hearing before a justice of the peace, roughly 17,000 people would not have been evicted by default between 2000 and 2018, the analysis estimated. If they had lived a five-minute drive away, they estimated more than 28,000 people could have averted evictions.
