Students to Schools: If You Really Support Black Lives, Act Like It

Induja Kumar, who will start at Vanderbilt University in the fall, toldthat she is already in contact with the school asking them to divest themselves from police presence on campus. She’s done the same at local public schools in her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. “I am drafting a petition and started an email-writing campaign to Vanderbilt University to ask them to divest from police presence at Vanderbilt University,” she said.

Students have been organizing in their high schools as well. Emily Wilson, a Black senior at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, toldthat she has been working with 482 Forward, a local education organizing network, to pressure schools in the Detroit public school community district to remove police from their campuses. Wilson argues that the money Detroit has put into police and security guards should instead be spent on counselors and social workers at her school.

“When I walk into my school, I’m greeted by metal detectors and security guards,” Wilson said. “I automatically feel an underlying sense of fear. I feel as if they see me as a criminal. I thought cops in schools were normal until I realized that only schools in Black and Brown communities get this treatment.”

Graduate students have also been pressuring their universities to remove police presence from campus. Ana Rosado, a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate at Northwestern University, toldthat a coalition of undergraduate and graduate student leaders from over 30 campus organizations within Northwestern are currently urging the school’s administration to publicly and immediately sever all formal and informal relationships with the Evanston, Illinois, police department and the Chicago police department.
