FILE - In this Nov. 23, 2019, file photo, Harvard and Yale students protest during halftime of the NCAA college football game between Harvard and Yale at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Conn. Students alarmed by climate change are stepping up pressure on universities to stop investing in fossil fuel industries and are gaining wider traction in 2020.
Several dozen schools have stopped investing at least partially in fossil fuels, but there is debate over how much the move slows the effects of climate change or affects the bottom line of companies like Chevron and Exxon Mobil. Environmentalist and author Bill McKibben, a leader of the movement to stop such investments, said students have played a huge role.
“It’s mainly a political statement about what the university is willing to invest in,” Jurewitz said. “It may be a worthwhile statement if you believe it will help get the ball rolling toward getting some realistic, meaningful policy like a carbon tax or cap and trade, something that will put a price on the carbon in some practical way.”, arguing divestment would cost university endowments millions a year with little impact on carbon emissions.
so go elsewhere duh.
So where do they think the money for the free tuition the school put up came from ?
I think the main takeaway here is that young people are involved and motivated. That's awesome!
Golf courses are a major source of toxic waste, pesticides, herbicides and excessive water use. The runoff pollutes the ground water. Close all golf courses and we would have enough water for people and crops
Wind and solar will never come close. What it will have to be is nuclear power.
Just a bunch of spolied kids who do not understand how the sausages are really made and what can be done. What replacements are out there right now that can replace all we get from fossil fuels. None not one thing can provide the steady btu.
So turn off the heat and air for those universities.
These things start small, but tend to snowball - I wouldn’t downplay the trend
This headline says it all. Fossil fuels are way down the list of things causing climate change. If you are serious about making a difference, protest the agriculture and livestock industries. However, it’s not quite as sexy to be outraged about cows as it is about oil/gas
Is the debate from fossip fuel companies? Or phony shell company they purchased to debate it?
Meanwhile, ask them to stop all transportation.
Sure cancel investments and raise their tuition to offset the loss.
None? But it sure feeeels good and that’s all that matters.
Don't think that going to change anything but hey I'll keep on driving my GMC Denali
They should also push the Federal Government, the biggest user of fossil fuels, to stop using so much. For example, end Saturday mail delivery and stop using millions of gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel every year.
I see lots of polyester, plastic, pigmented fabrics, not to mention healthy vaccinated protesters, likely with orthodonture, with connections to Yale and Harvard. How could any of that be possible without FOSSIL FUEL? None of it of course.
Wait until their tuition goes up. They will all be sitting with furrowed brows. In a pointless attempt to figure out what happened. Tell em. They happened.
Why don't the dummies just stop using all Oil and Oil based products?
Peeps don't understand the economic effects of ending fossil fuels, neither do I, mostly, so I don't yell with my fists at trillionaires.
Any action halting fossil-fuel consumption is welcome, the 'debate' a trick to do nothing. And who profits from doing nothing?
So we can all go back to using horses and buggies, oil lamps and candles.
Remember: The unnamed “companies, you so illusively refer to? They all have employees. Tens of thousands from field to janitors. Pretty easy to dehumanize by stating “companies.” Like its only the CEO who will lose his millions...and not the janitors and their families lives...
These universities shouldn't be receiving Federal funding.
Students are fine with the Communist Chinese taking over higher education and forcing the impressionable youth to buy Marxist philosophies which have led to the deaths of 100 million humans.
There is no financial loss to companies. There is an erosion of social traction, though, something that should not be discounted.
any small step at this point would help, we need to start taking care of our world sooner rather than later before it is too late
I am not giving up my Diesel F-250 sorry 🤷♂️
And we want everything FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Ugh)
Is he on a basketball scholarship?
