A student was shot in the leg while in class Friday morning. The shooting occurred at a high school in southeast Dallas .
The Dallas Independent School District superintendent said the student was shot by another student in the classroom at Wilmer-Hutchins High School."They helped us avoid additional tragedy," said Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde who appeared upset while she spoke to reporters.The shooter, who was armed with a handgun, was captured near the school's stadium area. A Dallas ISD police official confirmed the weapon was recovered.
"This is unacceptable and unimaginable, but it is happening across schools in America," said Elizalde. "When families send their children to school, they should not have to worry about the safety of the children. I take that very seriously." It's unknown how the weapon made its way inside, despite the school being equipped with metal-detectors.Dallas police responded to the scene Friday morning to investigate a shooting, a Dallas PD official told The National Desk over the phone.
