A powerful winter storm that has drenched NorCal and threatened to turn small communities into islands as raging rivers flood is beginning to weaken as it heads toward Los Angeles

An atmospheric river-fueled storm is expected to hit Los Angeles by Wednesday afternoon. In this file photo, people walk in downtown Los Angeles on a rainy day in early February.

“It’s already weakened a lot and it’s supposed to continue to weaken as it moves south,” said Lisa Phillips, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. “We’re just not expecting a lot of accumulation with this system.” In 2016, a series of intense atmospheric rivers helped ease California’s epic drought by producing record rain and snow in Northern California. While the storms can be beneficial for water supply they also can create hazards like flooding and mudslides.

Oakland, Los Angeles And More To Come: Why Teachers Keep Going On StrikeTeachers are increasingly earning less than other workers with comparable experience and education. As they go on strike across the U.S., many are calling for better pay and more funding for schools. Maybe if they can prove they are educating kids, they'd get paid more. Test scores just keep dropping, so why would we pay them more? You don't pay your worst employees high salaries. The only way, I see, to get out of our predicament is to invest in education. Yeah that’s because they aren’t workers. They show up about 150 days a year. Then, they get paid to do nothing for 30 years when they retire. Not. Workers.
