For sailors on the high seas,“striking a sail” means hauling it down, for instance to prepare for dropping anchor. “Striking a flag,” also known as “striking the colors,” refers to lowering a ship’s flag as a sign of salute or surrender.In 1768, British sailors ‘went on board several ships…and struck their yards, in order to prevent them from proceeding to sea.
