The preservation of ancient bones is a marvelous phenomenon. So exceptionally can these remains be preserved that their internal structure remains intact, especially in a type of sedimentary fossil bed called a Lagerstätte.

, and the apatite crystals found therein were a different form from apatite crystals usually found in bones.

The chemistry of the bones suggests that hydrothermal fluids – superheated water from under Earth's crust – seeped into the rock, heating it to temperatures around 300 to 350 degrees Celsius and melting the apatite present in the bones. As the bones cooled, the apatite recrystallized into the tabular form the scientists observed.

"We have also been able to radiometrically date the apatite which shows it formed during a time when all the continents on Earth were coming together and colliding to form the supercontinent Pangaea,""As these continents collided, they formed mountain belts with super-heated subterranean fluids flowing of them. It is these superheated fluids, which flowed throughout Ireland that cooked and melted the bones of these fossils causing the alteration we see today.

As far as we know, this is unique to Jarrow, and helps contextualize the history of the formation and its bones.

The Food Lab's Creamed Spinach RecipeThe bare bones of this creamed spinach recipe are pretty straightforward and classic: The spinach is cooked low and slow to gradually concentrate its juices. Combined with a creamy béchamel sauce, it reduces into a rich, thick coating with a near pudding-like texture. The only minor embellishments I include here are a doubling-up of the alliums and a last-minute shot of crème fraîche for a final dose of creaminess and fresh flavor.

Gas prices in LA County drop for 32nd consecutive dayThe average price is 22.7 cents less than one week ago, 89.8 cents lower than one month ago, and 6 cents below what it was one year ago. Still have a way to go to be at the prices when Trump was in office. And draining our reserves has helped, just a band aid. Robbing Peter to pay Paul. All smoke and mirrors. And still higher than the rest of the country. This is nothing to celebrate. Still higher than all 4 years under Trump Administration.
