The USS Enterprise's five-year mission is at the center of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and it's a defining purpose Star Trek: Discovery lacked.

The USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds benefits from something crucial that Star Trek: Discovery's eponymous starship always lacked. Strange New Worlds spun off from Discovery after Commander Michael Burnham led her crew to the 32nd century at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Strange New Worlds took over Discovery's mid-23rd century timeframe, chronicling the Starship Enterprise's new mission to explore the galaxy under Captain Christopher Pike .

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Strange New Worlds season 1 marked a turning point for Star Trek's TV series on Paramount+ as it was received with universal acclaim from critics and fans. From its inception, the serialized and cinematic Star Trek: Discovery was mired in controversy, and it had to fight and claw for recognition and appreciation, as did the first two seasons of Star Trek: Picard.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 1, the USS Discovery was a science vessel researching the mycelial network and the displacement-activated spore hub drive before it was drafted to fight in the Klingon War of 2256-2257. From season 2 onward, the Disco morphed into a crisis response ship, as Michael Burnham and her crew took on the greatest crises threatening the galaxy, from the genocidal rogue A.I. Control to the 32nd century's cataclysms The Burn and the Dark Matter Anomaly.

Can Discovery's Season 5 Mission Redefine The Star Trek Show? Captain Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery have now repeatedly saved the galaxy at two different points in the Star Trek timeline. Yet Burnham's vaunted reputation for solving the biggest problems facing the galaxy actually run counter to the very name of her starship.

Unfortunately, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will also conclude the series, just as the show is set to embark on a more adventurous tone, as Burnham and her crew go on a hunt for "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy." Discovery season 5 could be a reset from the prior seasons' back-to-back universal armageddons and infuse the 32nd century-set series with a more Star Trek spirit of exploration.
