About 6,000 residents and businesses — mainly in Prince George’s County — are affected by the electricity outages.

Officials with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office said onthat the flooding occurred in the Whitewood area. As of early Thursday morning, Buchanan County Sheriff John C. McClanahan said they had “made contact with 27 of the 44 reported unaccounted for” people, according to a statement from Virginia State Police.

There are no confirmed fatalities or injuries related to the flooding, the officials said. They are expected to hold a news conference Thursday with more details on the flooding and conditions.He said his deputies, along with other agencies including Virginia State Police, had worked “through the evening and night to locate and reunite area residents with their loved ones.

The floodwaters had started to recede, the sheriff said, and crews were also working to remove debris and mud from the roads so residents could get into their homes and assess the damage.
