One somewhat confusing note is that Tequila is actually a type of Mezcal. Not all Mezcal is Tequila, & typically people use Mezcal & Tequila as respective names for different products. Tequila production uses only Weber agave, and must be from Jalisco or a few other small areas.
Smoky is just one of the complex favors in Mezcal, & varies by bottling. But it’s certainly a valid taste descriptor of many mezcals, and is imparted by the process. Madre definitely has an amazing collection.
