The biggest primary night since the coronavirus pandemic featured slow vote counts and surprise nominees. Here are POLITICO's top takeaways from Tuesday's primaries:

And on Tuesday night, they watched voters push him out in favor of state Sen. Randy Feenstra.

Nearly every corner of the Republican Party came together to aid Feenstra when tightening polls indicated he could nab the seat. Feenstra’s backers included the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, evangelical leaders, former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, Karl Rove, five current Republican congressmen and longtime Iowa political operatives.

Party leaders view Greenfield as a solid matchup against GOP Sen. Joni Ernst in a race that is expected to be highly competitive and expensive. Both parties have tens of millions booked for TV in the summer and fall and will have outside groups on TV in the coming weeks when the general election starts in earnest.

The female nominees: Ashley Hinson, a state representative who will take on Rep. Abby Finkenauer ; Victoria Spartz, a state senator who is running for Brooks’ open seat; Yvette Herrell, the 2018 GOP nominee who will get a rematch with Rep. Xochitl Torres Small ; and Mariannette Miller Meeks, a state senator vying for an open seat in southeast Iowa after three previous failed congressional bids.

We'll see how the president will react to the loss of the House member whose philosophy is probably closest to his. I wonder if Steve King is waiting for seanhannity and the right-wing hosts who loved him for so long to give him a job. I wouldn't count on their loyalty.

how sad it is that it took 9 years

Hopefully IOWA will be smart enough to also remove Chuck Grassley from the Senate

Great
