Highsmith and the Steelers took heat on social media Sunday evening and most of Monday after the celebration against the Browns.

Damar Hamlin posts first pic from hospital, wishes team well. Bills’ response was straight out of a movie

What fans didn’t get was a celebration that the team had following a Highsmith sack. That celebration? Well, one of Highsmith’s teammates emulated CPR on him by pumping on his chest while he was on the ground. That came just days after Pittsburgh-area native and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest that required 10 minutes of CPR on the field during his team’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals last Monday.“Classless Steelers with the CPR celebration,” another wrote.

Highsmith was reportedly “contrite” Monday in the Steelers locker room, and insisted that the celebration had nothing to do with Hamlin.that he was simply tired in the game — he played all but two snaps — and that was how the celebration came to be. “I just don’t want people to think of me that way and think I was doing anything ,” Highsmith said. Because I would never, ever, ever, ever wants to do that intentionally, and I would never ever would do that.”The Post-Gazette pointed out that the 25-year-old Highsmith has “perhaps the most sterling reputation of any Steelers player,” and was the team’s nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship award this season.

“I just want people to know that I have nothing but love for Damar and his family,” Highsmith said according to the Post-Gazette. “When that happened, I was shook for a couple days. Me and my wife, we were watching the game, we immediately saw it and intentionally started praying, intentionally prayed for him, his parents, the doctors, the nurses. Because me and her, we’re both followers of Christ.
