U.S. steel importers are anxiously waiting to find out whether the Supreme Court will agree to hear their case challenging the constitutionality of President Donald Trump’s steel tariffs

EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan’s decision to explore the possibility of entering the race to become the next WTO director-general is raising concerns in Europe about his ability to go toe-to-toe with the United States in a possible tariff war over digital services taxes, our Brussels colleagues report.

“It’s an ill-conceived and ill-thought-through plan. The EU needs a strong commissioner on trade and not one that has inflicted self harm on himself and therefore our trade instruments,” one EU diplomat said.Still, Hogan cleared one obstacle over the weekend by securing the support of Ireland, his home country, for the nomination.

Nominations for the job close on July 8. If Hogan’s nomination is received by the WTO this week, he would be the fifth person and second European to formally enter the race. "This is now a real safety issue, endangering the safe operation of ships. We cannot expect seafarers to stay at sea forever," Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the U.N.'s International Maritime Organization,
